Tamil Nadu Sees Second Bus Disaster in 24 Hours; 13 Injured

Back-to-back state bus crashes spark outrage over passenger safety.

Barely a day after a horrific collision claimed 11 lives, Tamil Nadu was rocked by yet another catastrophic accident on Tuesday morning when two Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses collided head-on near Uthangarai town in Krishnagiri district, leaving 13 passengers injured, including two in critical condition, and reigniting serious questions about the safety of government-run public transport across the state.

The latest crash occurred on the busy Uthangarai-Krishnagiri stretch when a bus en route to Krishnagiri suddenly crossed into the opposite lane and rammed directly into an oncoming bus bound for Tiruvannamalai, producing a thunderous impact that mangled the front portions of both vehicles and trapped several passengers inside the wreckage amid shattered glass and twisted metal.

Rescue teams and local residents rushed to the scene, extricating the injured before ambulances transferred all 13 victims to Uthangarai Government Hospital, where medical staff are battling to stabilise the two critically injured passengers while treating the remaining eleven for fractures, lacerations, and trauma, as preliminary investigations focus on possible overspeeding, driver fatigue, or mechanical failure.

This incident follows Monday’s devastating Thirupathur tragedy, where two state buses travelling between Madurai and Karaikudi collided with such force that the front sections were crushed beyond recognition, killing 11 people on the spot and leaving nearly 40 others with severe injuries, prompting Chief Minister M K Stalin to express profound grief and order immediate high-quality medical care for survivors.

With two deadly government bus collisions occurring within 24 hours and claiming lives and limbs across different districts, public anger is mounting over persistent road safety lapses, while authorities face mounting pressure to enforce stricter driver protocols, vehicle maintenance standards, and route monitoring to prevent Tamil Nadu’s highways from turning into recurring scenes of preventable carnage.
