Tamil Nadu Rolls Out Digital Census 2027 With Self-Enumeration From July 17

Tamil Nadu to begin digital Census 2027 with self-enumeration on July 17 and house listing starting August 1.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced the schedule for the first phase of the upcoming Census 2027, marking the state's participation in India's first fully digital census exercise after a 15-year gap since the last count in 2011. Self-enumeration, allowing eligible residents to submit household details online via a dedicated portal, will commence on July 17, 2026, and continue for 15 days until July 31, 2026. This innovative step gives citizens the option to provide information directly, reducing reliance on traditional door-to-door visits and enhancing efficiency.

Following self-enumeration, the house listing and housing census operations (HLO) will begin on August 1, 2026, and run through August 30, 2026. During this 30-day period, enumerators will conduct field verification, geo-tagging structures, and collect data on 33 household particulars, including building materials, amenities, assets, and socio-economic indicators. The phase, spanning 45 days in total, will cover every urban and rural household across the state, with officials emphasizing comprehensive coverage to capture accurate demographics, housing conditions, and modern amenities.

The initiative aligns with the national framework set by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, where houselisting operations occur between April 1 and September 30, 2026, in a 30-day window notified by each state or Union territory. Tamil Nadu's later start in July follows the Assembly elections expected earlier in the year, ensuring administrative continuity under the new government. The actual population enumeration, including caste details as announced nationally, is slated for February 2027, with March 1, 2027, as the reference date for most areas.

This digital-first approach introduces tools like mobile applications, a centralized Census Management and Monitoring System, and self-enumeration for the first time nationwide, aiming to improve data accuracy, speed, and accessibility. In Tamil Nadu, preparations involve training around 1.5 lakh officials and functionaries to handle the technology-driven process. Authorities have stressed that the exercise will collect vital data for policy planning, resource allocation, and development programs in the years ahead.

The announcement underscores Tamil Nadu's commitment to modernizing the census process while maintaining the integrity of the exercise. Residents are encouraged to prepare for the self-enumeration phase by familiarizing themselves with the upcoming online portal once launched. As the state gears up for this landmark operation, the focus remains on ensuring inclusive participation and reliable outcomes to reflect the true demographic and housing profile of its population.
