Tamil Nadu Heatwave Intensifies As IMD Warns Of Heavy Rain In Coming Days

Tamil Nadu records temperatures above 42°C as IMD forecasts heavy rainfall over next three days.

Tamil Nadu is currently witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rainfall in parts of the state over the next three days. The contrasting weather pattern has left residents facing intense heat stress during daytime hours, particularly in interior and coastal regions where humidity levels remain high.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, several districts are likely to receive spells of significant rainfall in the coming days, which may provide temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave. However, officials have cautioned that the rainfall is expected to be unevenly distributed and may not substantially reduce the overall high temperature conditions prevailing across the state.

On Friday, multiple locations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recorded temperatures above 37.8°C, highlighting the severity of the heatwave. Vellore registered the highest temperature in the state at 42.2°C, making it one of the hottest recorded centres during the current spell. Other major cities, including Tiruchirappalli, Chennai (Meenambakkam), and Madurai Airport, reported temperatures close to 40°C, indicating widespread heat conditions.

Several other districts also experienced near or above 39°C temperatures, with Madurai city, Tirupattur, and Dharmapuri recording around 39.4°C. Erode, Karur, Paramathi, and Tiruttani hovered near 38.9°C, while Nagapattinam recorded about 38.3°C. Even coastal and southern areas such as Palayamkottai and Puducherry saw temperatures around 37.8°C, showing that the heatwave has affected both inland and coastal regions.

The IMD has warned that high humidity combined with elevated temperatures could worsen heat stress conditions, especially during peak afternoon hours. Coastal districts like Chennai are expected to feel even hotter due to moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. The forecast suggests that Chennai may record maximum temperatures of around 40°C on Sunday, along with persistently sultry weather conditions.

Meteorologists have advised residents to take precautions such as avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, staying hydrated, and limiting outdoor activities where possible. While upcoming rainfall may provide short-term relief in some areas, experts note that it is unlikely to significantly reduce the overall heat intensity as Tamil Nadu continues deeper into the summer season.
