Tamil Nadu Government Launches Ambitious Plan to Boost Organic Farming
The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled a robust initiative to promote organic and natural farming statewide.
The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled a robust initiative to promote organic and natural farming statewide, blending financial incentives, awareness campaigns, and infrastructure support. Announced on Sunday, the plan aims to transition farmers to sustainable practices while enhancing food quality and market access.
State Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam revealed a Rs 12 crore allocation to roll out activities across 37 districts. Under the National Mission on Natural Farming, a two-year program will establish clusters benefiting 7,500 farmers. To inspire the next generation, 38,600 students from higher secondary schools and colleges will visit organic farms. Financial incentives include full waivers on certification fees and Rs 3.5 crore for organic manure production. The ‘Nammazhvar Award’ will honor three top organic farmers in 2025-26 with Rs 2 lakh each and certificates.
Quality assurance is a priority, with Rs 6.16 crore funding four new laboratories at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Chennai, Thoothukudi, Coimbatore, and Madurai. These facilities will test organic produce like traditional rice, vegetables, and spices to meet premium standards. In the 29 non-delta districts, where paddy spans 34 lakh acres, a Rs 102 crore package will subsidize machine planting, certified seeds, and pesticide residue testing during the Kar, Kuruvai, and Sornavari seasons, boosting food grain output.
Market support is also key, with organic products set to be sold in government spaces like the Poomalai market complex, linking farmers directly to consumers. This comprehensive strategy reflects Tamil Nadu’s commitment to sustainability, building on its agricultural heritage to foster healthier ecosystems and livelihoods. By easing certification, enhancing production, and opening markets, the state aims to lead India’s organic farming movement, ensuring long-term benefits for farmers and consumers alike.
