Tamil Nadu Creates 2,546 Posts For Singappen Special Task Force

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced on Monday that 2,546 new posts had been created for the Singappen Special Task Force, a dedicated police unit focused on strengthening the safety of women and children across the state. The announcement was made while replying to the debate on demands for grants for the Police, Fire and Rescue Services departments in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The task force has been equipped with 327 four-wheelers, 109 two-wheelers and modern equipment worth Rs 357 crore, according to the Chief Minister. Since its formation, the unit has registered 268 criminal cases and safely rescued 125 missing women and children, helping reunite them with their families. It has also conducted 37,150 awareness programmes across the state.

The Singappen Special Task Force has additionally worked to prevent child marriages, with 21 such cases being stopped, according to the government. Vijay highlighted the administration's focus on preventing offences rather than limiting its efforts to responding after crimes occur. He noted that ensuring women can live without fear and protecting children remained among the government's key responsibilities.

The Chief Minister also linked effective policing with wider economic and social development, describing the police as the foundation of peace and development. He emphasised the importance of maintaining law and order to support industrial investment and economic progress, while stressing that law enforcement must remain firm against those who violate the law.

On the issue of narcotics, Vijay outlined the deployment of 65 anti-drug squads across 37 districts and nine commissionerates. Police have registered 3,263 cases under anti-narcotics laws and arrested 4,350 people, while authorities have seized 4,846 kg of ganja and 116,159 narcotic tablets. The government has identified dismantling drug-trafficking networks and protecting young people from addiction as key priorities requiring sustained action.

Vijay also outlined measures to strengthen action against corruption and improve safeguards against deaths in police custody. He directed enforcement agencies to carry out their statutory duties without hesitation and maintained that corruption would not be tolerated. The government also plans to strengthen CCTV surveillance, medical examinations, technology-based monitoring, professional training and accountability mechanisms, with custodial death cases to be investigated transparently and according to law.
