Tamil Nadu's Liquor Crackdown Delivers Real Safety For Women And Families

Tamil Nadu closes 717 liquor outlets near schools and worship places.

Women across parts of Tamil Nadu have welcomed the state government’s decision to shut down hundreds of liquor outlets operating near schools and places of worship, with many publicly thanking Chief Minister Joseph Vijay for the move. The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the closure of 717 outlets run by Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation, commonly known as TASMAC, located within 500 meters of educational institutions and religious sites.

Among those expressing relief was 48-year-old Manoranjitham, a petty shop owner from Chennai’s Teynampet area, who said a nearby TASMAC outlet had caused years of distress for residents. The liquor shop, located close to a government school, reportedly attracted large crowds of drinkers throughout the day. According to local residents, the outlet contributed to frequent disturbances and created an unsafe atmosphere for women and children in the neighborhood.

Manoranjitham said alcohol addiction had severely affected several families in the locality, including members of her own extended family. She claimed many women suffered financial and emotional distress because of excessive drinking among family members. Speaking about the government’s decision, she said women primarily wanted liquor shops to be shut and suggested the move could significantly improve the lives of ordinary households across the state.

Residents in other parts of Chennai, including Royapettah, also reportedly welcomed the closures, describing them as a step toward improving public safety and reducing social problems linked to alcoholism. For many women, the issue extends beyond politics and is closely tied to everyday security, domestic stability, and the welfare of children. The government’s action has therefore been viewed by supporters as a socially driven measure rather than merely an administrative decision.

The crackdown forms part of a broader initiative by the Tamil Nadu government to regulate the location of liquor outlets and address public concerns over their proximity to sensitive areas. TASMAC outlets have long been a politically sensitive issue in the state, with women’s groups and social activists repeatedly demanding stricter controls or phased prohibition. Alcohol-related social issues, including domestic violence and financial hardship, have frequently featured in public debates and election campaigns in Tamil Nadu.

The move also carries political significance for the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government led by Vijay, which came to power earlier this year following a landmark electoral victory. Supporters of the decision argue that visible welfare-oriented measures could strengthen the government’s popularity among women voters, a demographic considered crucial in Tamil Nadu politics. Opposition parties, however, are expected to closely monitor the implementation and long-term impact of the policy in the coming months.
