Tamil Nadu Braces for Intermittent Rain and Heavy Showers as Low Pressure System Approaches

IMD issues yellow alert as low-pressure system brings widespread rain to Tamil Nadu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 11 districts across Tamil Nadu as a low-pressure system near Sri Lanka steadily moves towards the Comorin Sea, intensifying rain activity across the region. Light to moderate rainfall is expected at multiple places in Tamil Nadu, along with thunderstorm and lightning at isolated locations, marking the onset of the winter rainfall pattern in the state.

Districts including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore are forecasted to experience heavy rainfall at isolated spots during this period. Residents and authorities have been advised to stay alert as these intense showers may cause localized disruptions.

Chennai is expected to witness intermittent spells of light to moderate rain, with partly cloudy skies prevailing. Thunderstorms and lightning activity are also likely, contributing to a cooler and more humid atmosphere in the city. Maximum temperatures are projected to hover between 31°C and 32°C, while minima will range from 25°C to 26°C.

The forecast for the coming days indicates that on November 23 and 24, moderate to light rain will persist in many parts of South Tamil Nadu, with isolated heavy rainfall continuing in the aforementioned districts as well as the Karaikal area. The low-pressure system is anticipated to strengthen further, sustaining the rainy conditions and adding to the cumulative precipitation over the state.

Authorities continue monitoring the weather developments closely, urging citizens to take precautions during travel and outdoor activities. The rainfall is expected to bring much-needed relief to the parched regions but may also cause waterlogging and traffic delays in urban centers. The region should prepare for continued rainfall as the low-pressure system advances over the Bay of Bengal.
