Sydney Hero Ahmed Al Ahmed Says He Would Disarm Gunman Again Despite Injuries

Ahmed Al Ahmed, who tackled a gunman at Bondi Beach, remains in critical condition but says he would act the same again.

Ahmed Al Ahmed, the Syrian-born bystander who bravely disarmed a gunman during Sunday’s Bondi Beach attack, is fighting for his life in hospital. Despite being riddled with bullets, Ahmed, in his 40s, told his lawyer he would do it again to save lives.

The attack occurred around 6:45 pm during a public Hanukkah celebration when two gunmen opened fire from a footbridge. Ahmed lunged at one of the attackers, wrestled the rifle from him, and prevented further casualties before being shot twice himself.

Ahmed sustained severe injuries to his left arm and shoulder, including a bullet lodged in his back, which may lead to the loss of his arm. His lawyer, Sam Issa, said Ahmed had lost a significant amount of blood and was in much worse condition than initially expected.

A humble father of two young daughters, Ahmed came to Australia in 2006 and was granted citizenship in 2022. His lawyer hopes the Australian government may extend citizenship to Ahmed’s elderly parents as a reward for their son’s heroism.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns have publicly commended Ahmed’s courage. The community has rallied in support, with over 5,700 donors contributing more than $570,000 to a GoFundMe campaign, including a $100,000 donation from US billionaire Bill Ackman.

Ahmed’s family described him as being in good spirits despite the life-threatening injuries. His father said, “He thanks God that he was able to save innocent lives,” while his mother recalled her tears upon learning of his bravery. Friends and witnesses continue to hail him as a true hero of Sydney.
