In an engaging dialogue with US podcaster Lex Fridman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed how Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy of selfless service has been a cornerstone of his life, values, and governance. Recalling his childhood visits to his village library, Modi shared how Vivekananda’s teachings left a lasting imprint. He narrated a tale of Vivekananda seeking divine aid for his ailing mother, only to realize that serving humanity was the truest devotion—a lesson Modi said continues to guide his leadership.
Modi also credited Swami Atmasthananda, whom he met at the Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Ashram, for deepening his commitment to societal welfare. During the podcast, Fridman recited the Gayatri Mantra, prompting Modi to refine his pronunciation and explain its blend of spirituality and science rooted in “Surya Upasana.” He highlighted India’s ancient wisdom as a fusion of both realms, offering enduring lessons for humanity.
Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s mass mobilization, Modi emphasized turning initiatives into people-driven movements, rooted in inclusivity and service over power. On India-China ties, he likened their differences to familial spats, advocating dialogue over conflict. “The 21st century belongs to Asia… cooperation between India and China is vital for global stability,” he said, reinforcing India’s peace advocacy.
