Rs 313 crore assistance announced for tea garden workers welfare.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday announced a special assistance package worth ₹313.30 crore for tea garden workers across North Bengal. The welfare initiative is aimed at improving living conditions, healthcare access and educational infrastructure for workers and their families residing in both the plains and hilly regions of the state’s tea-producing areas.
According to an official statement issued by the Chief Minister, a state-level committee has finalised the implementation plan under the “Pradhan Mantri Cha Shramik Protsahan Yojana (PMCSPY)” for West Bengal. The government said the scheme is designed to strengthen the socio-economic conditions of tea garden workers through targeted investments in key development sectors.
The largest allocation under the package has been earmarked for education. Around ₹177 crore will be spent on strengthening educational infrastructure and improving learning outcomes for children of tea garden workers. The government said the focus will be on enhancing access to quality education and introducing better support systems for students in these regions.

In addition, ₹72 crore has been allocated for upgrading healthcare facilities in tea garden areas. The funds will be used to improve medical infrastructure and ensure better access to essential health services for workers and their families, who often face challenges in reaching advanced healthcare centres.
The package also includes ₹63 crore for the construction of 321 resting sheds, with 88 planned for hilly areas and 233 for the plains. These sheds are expected to feature basic modern amenities such as solar-powered lighting, clean drinking water, comfortable seating arrangements and hygienic toilet facilities, aimed at improving working conditions in plantations.
The North Bengal Development Department (NBDD) will oversee the execution of the scheme in coordination with the State Health Department, the Paschim Banga Samagra Siksha Mission and district administrations. The Chief Minister said the government remains committed to the welfare and long-term development of tea garden workers, who form a key part of the region’s economy.
