Suspicious Man Nabbed Outside Parliament in Security Scare

20-year-old apprehended near Parliament House, sparking investigation.

A 20-year-old man described as "suspicious" was detained by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) near the Parliament House Complex in New Delhi on Saturday morning, heightening security concerns around one of India’s most sensitive landmarks. The incident, which occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Raisina Road between Rail Bhawan and the Parliament, comes just a day after another individual was caught attempting to scale the complex’s wall, prompting a renewed focus on vigilance.

The man, who had recently arrived in Delhi from Bengaluru and was reportedly planning to travel to Dubai, was intercepted by CISF personnel as part of a proactive security protocol. A senior security officer stated that nothing incriminating was found on him, though a copy of his Aadhaar card and passport was discovered on his phone. After preliminary questioning, he was handed over to the Kartavya Path Police Station for further investigation to determine his intentions.

The CISF, tasked with securing the Parliament complex since replacing the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) last year, has implemented a stringent standard operating procedure (SOP) following a series of security incidents. The SOP emphasizes proactive profiling to identify and intercept individuals whose behavior appears suspicious or threatening. “The Parliament complex attracts many visitors daily, including tourists taking photos, but we are now actively monitoring for any unusual activity to prevent untoward incidents,” another security officer explained.

This latest apprehension follows a troubling pattern of security breaches at the Parliament. On August 22, a man was detained for attempting to climb the complex’s perimeter wall, raising alarms about vulnerabilities. The measures trace back to a significant breach in December 2023, when two individuals released yellow smoke canisters inside the Parliament chamber during a session, while two others protested outside. These incidents, coupled with the memory of the 2001 terrorist attack on the Parliament, which was thwarted by security forces, have intensified efforts to safeguard the iconic building.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to ascertain the motives of the detained man. The heightened security measures reflect the ongoing challenge of balancing public access with the need to protect a symbol of India’s democracy, ensuring no risks are overlooked in the face of potential threats.
