Surat Temple Tragedy Reignites Urgent Debate Over AI Chatbots and Mental Health Safeguards

Police recovered ChatGPT search history from the phones of two Surat college students found dead.

Two college students were found dead inside the washroom of a temple in Surat in a case that has drawn widespread attention after police discovered the women had searched for suicide methods on ChatGPT before their deaths. The tragic incident prompted a brief but notable reaction from tech billionaire Elon Musk, who responded to reports about the case with a single-word comment on social media: "Yikes".

According to police, the two women, both aged between 18 and 20, had left their homes for college but did not return by afternoon. Concerned family members alerted authorities, who began tracing their mobile phone locations. The search eventually led officers to the Swaminarayan Temple, where a scooter belonging to one of the students was found parked outside the premises. CCTV footage later showed the two entering a washroom inside the temple complex.

Police subsequently discovered their bodies inside the washroom. Investigators recovered bottles of an anaesthetic substance and syringes near the scene. According to N. P. Gohil, the two women were childhood friends and college students—one studying in the first year of commerce and the other in the second year. Authorities said preliminary findings suggest the women injected an anaesthetic substance.

During the investigation, police unlocked the victims’ phones and found search queries related to suicide methods on ChatGPT. Officers also discovered a screenshot in the phone gallery of a news report describing a case in which a woman died after injecting anaesthetic to end her life. Officials said the bodies have been sent for autopsy while forensic examinations and further enquiries continue to determine what circumstances may have led to the incident.

The case gained additional attention after Musk commented on the incident on X. Musk has frequently criticised ChatGPT’s developer, OpenAI, and has promoted Grok, an artificial intelligence chatbot integrated with the X platform, as an alternative.

Musk has also been involved in a legal dispute with OpenAI and its leadership, including CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman. He has accused the company of deviating from its original non-profit mission and transforming into a closed-source, profit-driven organisation. Meanwhile, authorities in Surat continue their investigation into the deaths, examining digital evidence, forensic reports, and possible personal factors behind the tragedy.
