Supriya Sule Urges Government To Act Against US Over Seafarers’ Deaths
Supriya Sule urges action over deaths of Indian seafarers.
Opposition parties intensified pressure on the Centre on Saturday over the deaths of three Indian seafarers in US military strikes on commercial vessels off the coast of Oman, with Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule calling for a stronger response from the government and greater support for the affected families.
The remarks came amid growing political scrutiny of the government's handling of the incident, which has raised concerns about the safety of Indian sailors operating in the Gulf of Oman and other conflict-prone maritime regions. The deaths have sparked demands for accountability and stronger diplomatic engagement to protect Indian citizens working aboard international commercial vessels.
Sule described the incident as a tragedy and said India should adopt a firm stance when the lives of its citizens are lost in foreign military actions. Referring to the deceased seafarers, she said the country had a responsibility to stand up for its citizens and ensure that their families receive justice and support. She also indicated that if the government failed to act decisively, opposition parties would continue to raise the issue and advocate on behalf of the victims' families.

The controversy comes a day after India reportedly summoned a senior American diplomat in New Delhi for the second time in a week and lodged a strong protest over the strikes. The diplomatic démarche reflected growing concern within the government over the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the broader implications for Indian nationals working in international shipping routes affected by regional tensions.
The incident has renewed focus on the risks faced by Indian seafarers in strategically important waterways that have become increasingly volatile due to ongoing conflicts in West Asia. India is one of the world's largest suppliers of maritime manpower, with thousands of Indian crew members serving on merchant vessels operating across the Gulf region and other global trade corridors. Opposition leaders have urged the Centre to pursue the matter vigorously through diplomatic channels and seek clarity regarding the circumstances that led to the deaths.
They have also called for enhanced measures to ensure the safety of Indian maritime workers deployed in high-risk zones, arguing that the government must prioritise the protection of citizens working abroad. As political reactions continue to mount, the deaths of the three seafarers have emerged as both a humanitarian and diplomatic issue, placing pressure on the government to balance strategic relations with the United States while responding to domestic concerns over the safety and welfare of Indian nationals overseas.
