Supreme Court to Rule on Actor Darshan’s Bail

Karnataka challenges bail in Renukaswamy murder case.

The Supreme Court of India reserved its verdict on a plea by the Karnataka government to cancel the bail granted to Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa in the Renukaswamy murder case. The bench, comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, heard arguments from both sides and directed lawyers for some accused to submit written submissions within a week.

The Karnataka High Court had previously granted bail to Darshan and co-accused on December 13, 2024, prompting the state’s challenge. Darshan, actress Pavithra Gowda, and others are accused of abducting and torturing 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan who allegedly sent obscene messages to Gowda. According to police, Renukaswamy was held in a Bengaluru shed for three days in June 2024, tortured, and his body was later found in a drain.

The Supreme Court issued notices to Darshan, Gowda, and other accused on January 24, 2025, following the state’s plea. The case has drawn significant attention due to Darshan’s prominence and the severity of the allegations.
