Supreme Court Rejects Urgent Hearing in Allahabad HC Judge Cash Row Plea
Court rebukes lawyer over judge’s misconduct allegations
The Supreme Court on Monday declined an urgent hearing for a plea seeking an FIR against Allahabad High Court Justice Yashwant Varma in a controversial cash discovery case. Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran dismissed lawyer Mathews Nedumpara’s request for immediate listing, warning against dictating court proceedings and reprimanding him for disrespectfully addressing Justice Varma as “Varma.” “He is still a judge of the court. Have some decorum,” the CJI stated.
Nedumpara, pressing for an FIR and investigation, argued it was his third petition on the issue, but the bench insisted the matter would be listed in due course. The plea stems from a March 14 incident where half-burnt cash was found in a storeroom at Varma’s official residence, then as a Delhi High Court judge. A three-judge panel, led by Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, investigated over 10 days, examining 55 witnesses. The panel concluded Varma and his family had control over the storeroom, alleging misconduct severe enough to warrant impeachment.
On May 8, former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna recommended Varma’s impeachment to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Varma, now at the Allahabad High Court, has moved the Supreme Court to quash the inquiry panel’s report. The government plans to table a motion for his removal during Parliament’s Monsoon session, starting July 21.
