Strong Quake Strikes Near Egypt, Israel Feels Tremors After 5.4 Magnitude Shock
Earthquake off Egypt rattles Israel, no major damage
A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Egypt in the early hours of Monday, with tremors felt across several parts of the country as well as southern Israel, according to seismic monitoring agencies. The earthquake was recorded by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which said the quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, increasing the likelihood of tremors being felt in nearby regions. Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) also detected the earthquake and recorded it at a slightly higher magnitude of 5.6.
The institute placed the epicentre around 38 kilometres north of Suez City, with the earthquake occurring shortly after 3:00 am local time. Differences in earthquake measurements are common, as seismic agencies use different monitoring systems, data processing methods and calculation techniques. The earthquake was felt in Cairo and several northern governorates, according to local media reports. Residents in affected areas briefly moved out of their homes and buildings as a precaution after experiencing the tremors. However, authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage following the earthquake.
The Egyptian Red Crescent activated its emergency response plan in the governorates where the tremors were reported. Officials urged residents to remain cautious, especially around buildings showing signs of structural weakness or damage. The organisation advised people to follow official information from authorities and avoid relying on unverified reports circulating on social media. The earthquake’s impact was also reported beyond Egypt, with tremors being felt in southern Israel. According to reports citing GFZ and local authorities, residents in parts of southern Israel experienced the effects of the quake.

No major damage or casualties were immediately reported from the Israeli side following the tremors. Egypt is located near several active tectonic zones, including areas around the Gulf of Suez, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. These regions are known for occasional seismic activity due to movements along geological fault lines. While earthquakes of moderate strength occur periodically, most do not result in widespread destruction or major loss of life. Authorities continued monitoring the situation after the earthquake and assessed possible impacts in affected areas. Emergency teams remained prepared to respond if further issues emerged, while residents were advised to remain alert and follow safety guidelines.
Earthquake experts often note that shallow earthquakes can be felt over wider areas because seismic energy reaches the surface more quickly compared with deeper quakes. However, the level of damage depends on several factors, including the strength of the earthquake, distance from the epicentre, local geology and the quality of buildings in affected regions. The latest earthquake has renewed attention on seismic preparedness in Egypt and neighbouring areas, where moderate tremors are periodically recorded. While no significant damage has been reported so far, authorities continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
