Storm Hits Tehri Lake, Damages Huts; 28 Tourists Evacuated Safely

Storm damages Tehri Lake huts, 28 tourists rescued safely

At least 28 tourists were rescued after a sudden storm damaged floating hut structures on Tehri Lake in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district, triggering panic and emergency response operations in the popular tourism zone. The incident occurred near the Dobra-Chanti Bridge area, where strong winds battered lake-based accommodations late on Saturday evening.

According to officials, intense weather conditions led to structural damage in several floating huts, leaving tourists stranded on the water. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was immediately alerted after reports that occupants could be trapped or unable to safely return to shore due to drifting or damaged platforms.

Rescue teams from SDRF reached the site quickly and carried out a coordinated evacuation operation. Tourists were safely moved from the damaged floating huts to shore using boats arranged with the help of the tourism department. Authorities confirmed that all 28 tourists were brought to safety without any serious injuries reported.

The affected floating accommodations are part of the well-known Tehri Lake tourism setup, where hut-style stays and water-based activities attract visitors throughout the year. The area is operated under regulated tourism infrastructure that includes boat transfers and adventure sports, making it one of Uttarakhand’s key leisure destinations.

Officials said the storm caused sudden and severe wind activity over the lake, which is known to become unpredictable during changing weather conditions in the Himalayan region. Temporary restrictions and advisories are expected as authorities assess structural damage and safety compliance of remaining facilities.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over extreme weather risks in high-altitude tourism zones, where floating and water-based structures are particularly vulnerable. Authorities have stated that a detailed inspection will be conducted, and safety protocols may be reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
