Stalin Inaugurates ₹574 Crore Equinix Data Centre in Chennai

Equinix’s new Siruseri facility boosts Tamil Nadu’s digital hub status.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated a cutting-edge Equinix Data Centre at SIPCOT-Siruseri IT Park in Chengalpattu district, marking a significant milestone in the state’s journey to become India’s digital hub. Built with a hefty investment of Rs 574 crore, the state-of-the-art facility is designed to support artificial intelligence and next-generation technologies, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s position as a leader in digital infrastructure.

The US-based Equinix, a global leader in digital infrastructure, operates data centres across multiple countries, offering robust connectivity solutions for businesses worldwide. The Siruseri facility, a result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed during the 2022 investors’ summit, underscores the company’s commitment to Tamil Nadu’s tech ecosystem. Stalin, who laid the foundation stone in July 2022, officiated the launch at a ceremony held at the Secretariat, hosted by the Department of Industry.

A government release highlighted Tamil Nadu’s ambitious goals, stating, “The government is taking special initiatives to attract investments, create jobs for the youth, and grow the state’s economy to one trillion USD.” The Equinix Data Centre aligns with these objectives, contributing to Chennai’s rapid emergence as a major hub for information and data centres. The state is actively pursuing high-tech projects to generate high-paying jobs, with new data centres from various companies further boosting the region’s tech landscape.

The inauguration saw the presence of Industries Minister T R B Rajaa, Chief Secretary N Muruganantham, Industries Department Secretary V Arun Roy, and Equinix India Private Limited Managing Director Manoj Paul, along with senior officials. In a notable gesture, Paul presented a Rs 9 crore cheque from Equinix’s CSR fund to the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF), emphasizing the company’s dedication to Tamil Nadu’s growth and development.
