Sridhar Vembu Calls For President’s Rule As Tamil Nadu Political Crisis Deepens
Sridhar Vembu urges President’s Rule and fresh Tamil Nadu polls
Zoho Corporation founder Sridhar Vembu has called for the imposition of President’s Rule in Tamil Nadu and the conduct of fresh elections, arguing that the current fractured mandate has left the state without a stable governing majority following a closely contested assembly election. In a post on social media platform X, Vembu said the election arithmetic “does not add up” and warned that any government formed under the present conditions would likely remain unstable due to competing political pressures. He suggested that Tamil Nadu would be better served by returning to the electorate under stricter electoral enforcement mechanisms.
The comments come after a hung assembly outcome in the state election, where no single party or alliance secured a clear majority. According to the results cited, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, falling short of the 118-seat majority mark. The incumbent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance secured 73 seats, with the DMK itself winning 59 seats.
Vembu argued that the absence of a decisive majority could lead to political instability and governance challenges. He said that President’s Rule followed by fresh elections could provide a clearer mandate, particularly if accompanied by what he described as strict enforcement against cash-for-vote practices.
He also predicted that a re-election conducted under improved electoral conditions would significantly alter the outcome, stating that Vijay’s TVK could return with a stronger mandate. According to him, a cleaner electoral process would reflect a more accurate expression of voter preference in the state.Vembu further commented on broader political dynamics, suggesting that rival parties would need to reconsider their strategies in the event of fresh elections. He also made remarks about potential alignments, stating that established political formations would need to reassess their positions if faced with a renewed contest.

Additionally, he urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to contest independently in Tamil Nadu, even if it risks poor performance, framing it as a long-term strategy for rebuilding the party’s presence in the state. The remarks have added to ongoing political discussion in Tamil Nadu following the closely divided election outcome, which has raised questions about coalition stability, governance formation, and potential post-poll realignments. However, there has been no official response from election authorities or constitutional bodies regarding any move toward President’s Rule.
