Squall at 88 kmph Hits Kolkata, Seven Dead Across Electrocution and House Collapses

A violent Nor'wester hits Kolkata at 88 km/h, killing seven and disrupting flight operations.

At least seven people lost their lives, and widespread damage was reported across Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal after a powerful Nor’wester storm accompanied by heavy rainfall struck the region on Friday. The severe weather disrupted normal life, uprooted trees, damaged infrastructure, and affected transportation services, while flight operations at airports in and around Kolkata faced delays and diversions due to adverse weather conditions.

According to the India Meteorological Department, a strong squall moved over Alipore in Kolkata from the northwesterly direction at around 2:45 pm, recording a maximum wind speed of 88 kilometers per hour. Another squall swept across Dumdum in the North 24 Parganas district at approximately 2:29 pm, with wind speeds reaching 74 kilometers per hour. Both weather systems were accompanied by intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

The sudden storm brought a dramatic change in weather conditions after days of high temperatures and humid conditions in the state. However, the relief from the heat came at a significant cost, as strong winds and lightning caused damage to homes, trees, electric infrastructure, and public property. Emergency teams were deployed in several affected areas to clear roads and restore essential services.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced financial assistance for the families of those who lost their lives during the storm-related incidents. Addressing a press briefing, he stated that the deaths occurred due to a combination of factors, including electrocution, lightning strikes, railway-related incidents, house collapses, and other storm-linked accidents. He acknowledged that compensation could not replace the loss of human life but said the government would provide support to the affected families.

The chief minister announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh for each of the seven bereaved families. He further directed district magistrates and local elected representatives to ensure that the compensation is delivered promptly. Officials have also been instructed to closely monitor the situation and coordinate relief and restoration efforts in affected districts.

Authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage while restoration work remains underway in several locations. Weather officials have urged residents to remain cautious during periods of severe weather, as thunderstorms and squall activity are common during the pre-monsoon season in eastern India. The state administration has said it remains on alert and is prepared to respond to any further weather-related emergencies.
