SpiceJet Aircraft Lands Safely After Losing Wheel Mid Flight

SpiceJet flight lands safely in Mumbai after losing a wheel mid-air.

A SpiceJet Q400 aircraft experienced a critical incident when one of its outer wheels detached shortly after takeoff from Kandla airport in Gujarat on Friday, prompting an emergency landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The airline confirmed that the wheel was discovered on the Kandla runway post-takeoff, raising immediate concerns about the aircraft’s safety. Despite the alarming malfunction, the plane, equipped with six tyres, continued its journey and landed safely in Mumbai, averting a potential disaster.

SpiceJet issued a statement detailing the incident: “On September 12, an outer wheel of a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Kandla to Mumbai was found at the runway after takeoff. The aircraft continued its journey to Mumbai and landed safely.”

Following the smooth landing, the aircraft taxied to the terminal under its own power, and all passengers disembarked without incident. Sources, however, emphasized that the landing was classified as an emergency procedure due to the missing wheel, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Details regarding the number of passengers onboard and the exact cause of the wheel detachment remain unclear, with investigations underway to determine the factors behind the incident. The safe landing has been attributed to the crew’s professionalism and adherence to safety protocols.

The event has sparked renewed scrutiny of aircraft maintenance practices, with authorities likely to probe SpiceJet’s operational standards to prevent future occurrences.
