Speeding Thar Hits Motorcycle In Delhi; Man And Wife Killed On The Spot In Accident

Two people were killed on Wednesday evening after a speeding Mahindra Thar SUV rammed into their motorcycle in the Delhi Cantonment area of the national capital, in yet another fatal accident involving the popular SUV model in the city. The man riding the motorcycle and the woman riding pillion behind him were both killed on the spot, according to police, with the force of the collision leaving no chance of survival for either victim at the scene of the crash.

The victims have been identified as 55-year-old Sukhbir Singh and 45-year-old Anju Singh. According to their son, Rohit, the couple was returning home from work at the time of the accident, making their way through the Delhi Cantonment area when the SUV struck their motorcycle from behind or in a manner that instantly threw both riders off the vehicle.

Sukhbir and Anju were reportedly in a live-in relationship at the time of their deaths, and both had been employed with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) since 2007, having worked together at the civic body for nearly two decades before the fatal crash abruptly cut short both their lives and careers. Following the collision, local residents in the area moved quickly to apprehend the driver of the Thar before he could flee the scene, subsequently handing him over to police. The accused, who reportedly runs a dairy business in the Rohini area of Delhi, is currently being held in police custody as authorities continue their investigation into the exact circumstances that led to the crash.

As part of the probe, police said they are closely examining footage captured by CCTV cameras installed in and around the accident site, in an effort to reconstruct the precise sequence of events, including the speed of the SUV, the moment of impact, and whether any traffic violations preceded the collision. The bodies of both victims have since been shifted to a hospital, where a post-mortem examination is being carried out to formally determine and document the cause of death, a standard procedure in cases involving fatal road accidents in India. Police are expected to register formal charges against the driver based on the findings of the post-mortem report, the CCTV footage under review, and any additional witness statements gathered from people present in the area at the time of the crash.

Wednesday's incident adds to a troubling pattern of fatal accidents involving Mahindra Thar SUVs reported across Delhi and the wider National Capital Region in recent months, a trend that has increasingly drawn public and media attention to the vehicle's involvement in a string of high-speed collisions. In a separate incident in mid-August, a 40-year-old motorcyclist identified as Bechu Lal was killed after a Thar struck his bike in the Moti Nagar area of West Delhi, with the driver in that case fleeing the scene immediately after the collision. That crash followed yet another episode earlier the same month, in which a pedestrian was killed and another person seriously injured after a Thar mowed them down near the 11 Murti landmark in the Chanakyapuri area of the capital, marking the second such fatal incident involving the SUV model within the span of a single month.

The recurring nature of these accidents has intensified concerns among residents and traffic safety officials in Delhi regarding high-speed driving involving larger SUVs on the city's roads, particularly in areas with significant pedestrian and two-wheeler traffic. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the specific factors that may have contributed to Wednesday's crash, including whether excessive speed, distracted driving or any other form of negligence played a role in the fatal collision that claimed the lives of Sukhbir and Anju Singh.
