South Bengal To Receive Heavy Rain Till Tuesday, Met Office Forecasts
Heavy rain forecast across south Bengal through Tuesday.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall across several districts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, through Tuesday as an active low-pressure system interacts with the monsoon winds. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata said the low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal had become more pronounced and was expected to intensify into a depression by late Monday. The weather system is likely to bring continued rainfall across the region.
A red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Bankura, West Midnapore and Jhargram for Tuesday. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan and Birbhum districts. Other parts of south Bengal are likely to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms, with rainfall expected to decrease from Tuesday evening.
The weather system is also affecting conditions over the Bay of Bengal. Gale-force winds of around 40 to 50 kmph are being recorded over the sea due to the low-pressure area. Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the north Bay of Bengal along the West Bengal and Odisha coasts until Tuesday as rough conditions are expected to persist.

Kolkata has already experienced heavy rain since Monday morning, leaving several parts of the city waterlogged. Continuous rainfall has slowed traffic movement in and around the city, creating difficulties for commuters. The minimum temperature in Kolkata was recorded at 25 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, around 1.5 degrees below normal, while Sunday’s maximum temperature was 30 degrees Celsius, 1.9 degrees below normal.
North Bengal is also expected to receive rainfall through Tuesday, although the intensity will vary between districts. Heavy rain is likely in Jalpaiguri and Kalimpong on Monday, while Alipurduar and Darjeeling could receive heavy rain on Tuesday. Scattered rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Malda and Cooch Behar during the period.
The weather office has indicated that rainfall activity in south Bengal should decline from Tuesday evening, with no further weather warning currently issued beyond that period. However, authorities and residents in districts under heavy-rain alerts are likely to remain cautious as the low-pressure system strengthens. The combination of heavy rain, waterlogging and strong winds could continue to affect normal activities in parts of the state until the system weakens.
