Sources Say GST Council Meeting Likely After State Elections

GST Council meeting expected after state elections in May.

The next meeting of the GST Council is likely to be held in late May or June 2026, after the conclusion of key state Assembly elections, according to government sources. The timing is being aligned to ensure full participation from states, which is essential for meeting quorum requirements in the Council’s decision-making process.

Officials indicated that the Centre prefers to convene the meeting only after newly elected state governments are in place. States such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry are currently in the election cycle, with results expected in early May, followed by government formation shortly thereafter.

The GST Council — chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman — is the apex decision-making body for indirect taxes in India, comprising representatives from both the Centre and states. Its meetings are crucial for determining tax rates, resolving disputes, and shaping the country’s Goods and Services Tax framework.

The upcoming meeting is expected to take up several pending issues, including GST rate rationalisation, simplification of compliance processes, and sector-specific relief measures. Industry stakeholders have been anticipating clarity on tax structures, especially after the significant reforms introduced in the previous Council meeting held in September 2025.

That meeting saw major changes, including a move toward simplifying tax slabs and addressing long-standing concerns such as inverted duty structures. Experts believe the next round of discussions could further streamline the GST regime and improve ease of doing business.

The delay in scheduling the meeting underscores the importance of cooperative federalism in GST decision-making. With states playing a critical role in shaping outcomes, the Centre appears keen to ensure that all stakeholders are adequately represented before key policy decisions are taken in the upcoming session.
