Sonia, Rahul Gandhi Engage With Mauritian PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam

Congress leaders met with the Mauritian Prime Minister, highlighting strong bilateral relations and cultural connections.

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Tuesday, emphasising the deep and enduring friendship between India and Mauritius. The meeting, held during Ramgoolam’s eight-day state visit to India, focused on strengthening bilateral ties and expanding the partnership between the two nations, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Rahul Gandhi, sharing images on his WhatsApp channel, described the talks as centred on the "deep and enduring friendship that binds our two nations and peoples."

Ramgoolam’s visit, spanning September 9 to 16, included stops in Mumbai, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Tirupati, and New Delhi, reflecting the strong cultural and historical connections between the two countries. In Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Ramgoolam, showcasing India’s rich heritage and reinforcing diplomatic bonds. Mauritius, home to a significant Indian diaspora, shares deep ties with India rooted in shared history, culture, and economic collaboration.

The discussions underscored the strategic importance of India-Mauritius relations, particularly in the Indian Ocean region, where both nations cooperate on maritime security, trade, and climate resilience. Recent agreements, including those on digital connectivity and infrastructure development, have further deepened the partnership. The visit aligns with India’s broader outreach to strengthen ties with Global South nations, with Mauritius serving as a key ally.
