Sonia, Kharge Lead Fiery Protest Against Bihar Voter Roll Revision
Opposition MPs slam Election Commission’s SIR at Parliament.
Tensions flared in the Parliament House complex today as prominent INDIA bloc leaders, including Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, spearheaded a high-octane protest against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. Joined by MPs from Samajwadi Party, TMC, DMK, and Left parties, including Dharmendra Yadav and Sagarika Ghose, the opposition gathered near Parliament’s Makar Dwar, brandishing banners and raising slogans demanding an immediate rollback of the SIR.
The protest, now in its 12th day with only a brief pause on Monday due to the passing of former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren, saw MPs wielding placards reading “Stop SIR” and “Discussion not deletion.” A striking banner accused the SIR of being a “Silent Invisible Rigging” tactic, with allegations of collusion between the Election Commission and the government. The opposition claims the SIR is a deliberate move to disenfranchise voters in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, undermining democratic fairness.
The ongoing protests have paralyzed parliamentary proceedings, with the Monsoon session, which began on July 21, witnessing repeated adjournments and minimal legislative progress, barring discussions on Operation Sindoor. The opposition’s relentless demand for a debate on the SIR issue has led to a persistent logjam in both Houses, frustrating efforts to conduct regular business.

Today’s demonstration underscored the opposition’s resolve, with MPs vocally challenging what they perceive as an assault on electoral integrity. As the standoff continues, the nation watches closely to see whether the government and Election Commission will address the opposition’s concerns or if the parliamentary deadlock will persist.
