Sonam Wangchuk Invites Supporters To Observe One-Day Hunger Strike In Solidarity Across India

Wangchuk calls for nationwide one-day solidarity hunger strike.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has appealed to people across the country to join him for a one-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where he is continuing an indefinite fast in support of environmental protection, education and the demands related to Ladakh. On Monday, the activist urged citizens who are unable to travel to the national capital to observe a day-long fast in their respective states as a show of solidarity.

Wangchuk, who said he was on the second day of his hunger strike sustained only on salt and water, made the appeal through a video message shared by Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke. Inviting supporters to participate, he said, "Namaskar, in support of education and environment, in support of CJP and Ladakh, today is my second day of Anshan on salt and water. Many people have joined here, you can also join. If you come here for one day of Anshan, it will be very good."

The activist said those who cannot travel to Delhi should organise or participate in similar symbolic hunger strikes in their own cities and states. According to Wangchuk, such participation would help strengthen the movement by demonstrating nationwide support for the issues being raised. He called on citizens from different parts of the country to stand together in support of environmental conservation and educational reforms while expressing solidarity with the people of Ladakh.

Wangchuk has been at the forefront of campaigns seeking stronger environmental safeguards and constitutional protections for Ladakh following its reorganisation as a Union Territory. He has consistently argued that the ecologically fragile Himalayan region requires greater legal protection to preserve its unique environment and cultural heritage. His previous protests and public campaigns have drawn attention to concerns over unchecked development, climate change and the need for sustainable governance in the region.

The latest hunger strike continues Wangchuk's broader advocacy for environmental sustainability and democratic participation in policymaking. Supporters at Jantar Mantar have joined him in the protest, while several civil society groups have expressed solidarity with his demands. The activist has maintained that his campaign is intended to encourage peaceful public participation and draw attention to issues affecting both Ladakh and the country's environmental future.

Wangchuk's appeal comes as public discussions continue over environmental protection, climate resilience and governance in ecologically sensitive regions. By inviting people to observe a one-day hunger strike, either in Delhi or from their own states, he aims to broaden participation in the movement and build nationwide awareness of the concerns he says require urgent attention from policymakers.
