Somnath Swabhiman Yatra 2026 Flagged Off By Odisha CM For 1,100 Devotees

Odisha CM launches pilgrimage to Somnath for devotees.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday flagged off the “Somnath Swabhiman Yatra-2026” from Bhubaneswar, marking the launch of a large-scale pilgrimage aimed at strengthening cultural and spiritual connections between Odisha and Gujarat. The initiative will take more than 1,100 devotees from the state to the Somnath Temple at Prabhas Patan in Gujarat aboard a specially arranged train.

The ceremonial flag-off was held in Bhubaneswar, where the Chief Minister formally launched the journey by waving the green flag. Addressing the gathering, Majhi described the pilgrimage as more than a travel arrangement, calling it a symbolic expression of devotion and India’s shared spiritual heritage. He said the initiative reflects unity between eastern and western India through the reverence of Lord Jagannath and Lord Somnath.

According to officials, the pilgrimage is part of the broader “Somnath Swabhiman Parva,” a nationwide cultural programme commemorating two key historical milestones—the completion of 1,000 years since the first attack on the Somnath Temple by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026 CE, and the 75th anniversary of its reconstruction and reconsecration after Independence under the leadership inspired by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The Chief Minister noted that the initiative aligns with the Union government’s “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” vision, which focuses on combining development with heritage preservation. He highlighted the upgraded facilities at the Somnath Temple complex, including modern infrastructure, a museum, exhibition gallery, and sea-view promenade developed under the PRASHAD scheme to enhance the pilgrim experience.

As part of the cultural exchange, the Odisha government has also sent sacred water from Bindusagar Lake in Ekamra Kshetra and holy soil from the Kedar Gouri Temple in Bhubaneswar to be offered at the Somnath Temple. Officials said these symbolic offerings represent the state’s deep-rooted Shaivite traditions and spiritual linkage with the western shrine.

Each pilgrim participating in the Yatra has been provided with a booklet titled “Om Namah Shivaya,” while their itinerary includes temple rituals, evening aarti, Rudrabhishek ceremonies, continuous chanting, and a light-and-sound show narrating the history of the Somnath Temple. Officials added that similar pilgrimages are also being organised from other states as part of the nationwide observance.
