Solan Ranks Fifth In India With Rs 8.10 Lakh Per-Capita GDP

Solan’s per-capita GDP reaches Rs 8.10 lakh.

Solan has emerged as the fifth-richest district in India in terms of per-capita GDP, with its per-capita income reaching Rs 8.10 lakh, according to the Economic Survey 2024-25. The figure is nearly three times Himachal Pradesh’s average per-capita income of Rs 2.83 lakh, placing Solan among the country’s leading district economies.

Solan’s position has been largely attributed to the rapid growth of the Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN) industrial cluster, which has developed into a major manufacturing and pharmaceutical hub. The region accounts for more than 90 per cent of Himachal Pradesh’s industrial activity and has become an important contributor to employment, exports and government revenue. Its strategic location near Punjab and Haryana has also helped attract businesses and investments.

The district is home to around 2,406 industrial units, including more than 2,100 micro, small and medium enterprises. The cluster is also described as Asia’s largest pharmaceutical hub, with around 350 manufacturing units. According to the available figures, industries in the region generate an estimated annual turnover of Rs 1 lakh crore, while exports are valued at around Rs 18,000 crore annually.

The industrial concentration has also made BBN a major contributor to the state’s economy. Industries in the region account for nearly 29 per cent of Himachal Pradesh’s GST collection and consume around 45 per cent of the state’s electricity. The cluster also has a large transportation network, including around 10,000 vehicles associated with its transport union and about 3,100 commercial vehicles.

Industry experts attribute the BBN region’s rapid expansion to its proximity to major markets and industrial centres in Punjab and Haryana. The Centre’s industrial incentive package announced in 2002 also helped attract investments and establish the region as a manufacturing destination. The resulting industrial growth has enabled Solan to outperform larger Himachal Pradesh districts such as Kangra, Mandi and Shimla in terms of per-capita economic output.

According to the Economic Survey, Solan is ranked behind Rangareddy in Telangana, Gurugram in Haryana, Bengaluru Urban in Karnataka and Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh. Rangareddy leads the list with a per-capita GDP of Rs 11.46 lakh, followed by Gurugram at Rs 9.05 lakh, Bengaluru Urban at Rs 8.93 lakh and Gautam Buddha Nagar at Rs 8.48 lakh. Per-capita GDP represents the value of goods and services produced in a district divided by its population and provides an indication of average economic output per person.
