SIT Investigates Wider Conspiracy After Badrinath Temple Donation Theft Confession

The main accused in the alleged theft of offerings from the Badrinath temple has confessed to his role during custodial interrogation, police officials said. The accused, identified as Pramod Nautiyal, an employee of the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee (BKTC), allegedly admitted his involvement after investigators confronted him with CCTV footage, video recordings and other electronic evidence. According to police, Nautiyal had initially denied any involvement in the alleged theft. However, after three days of questioning during his four-day police remand, investigators claimed that he changed his statement and admitted to his role in the case.

Authorities said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is continuing its probe to determine whether other individuals were involved and whether there was a larger conspiracy behind the incident. Badrinath Station House Officer Mahadev Uniyal said the accused was questioned in multiple rounds before making the alleged confession. "He admitted before investigators that he was involved in the theft at Badrinath Dham and acknowledged that he had made a grave mistake," the officer said. Police said the confession was recorded during the ongoing investigation, while further legal procedures will determine the course of the case. During searches conducted by the SIT, officials recovered several valuables from Nautiyal’s government accommodation.

Police said the recovered items included a gem-studded gold crown believed to be among the missing ceremonial items, along with cash, gold ornaments, a Shaligram stone, a silver idol, a silver serpent, Nepalese currency and other valuables. Investigators had earlier recovered the missing ceremonial crown, which was adorned with precious stones and held religious significance at the temple. The recovery of the crown and other articles has become a key part of the evidence being examined by the SIT as it investigates the alleged theft. The Badrinath temple, one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, attracts thousands of devotees every year as part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.

Offerings, ornaments and ceremonial items associated with the temple are considered highly significant, making security and accountability around temple assets a sensitive issue. The SIT is now examining several unanswered questions, including whether the alleged theft involved only one person or whether others may have assisted in the crime. Investigators are also reviewing available electronic evidence, financial records and other material collected during the probe to establish the full sequence of events. Police officials have not disclosed further details about the timeline of the alleged theft or the exact value of the missing items.

Authorities are expected to continue questioning the accused and examining additional evidence before reaching further conclusions. The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of an employee linked to the temple management committee and the recovery of valuable religious articles. While police have claimed progress in the investigation, the matter remains under legal scrutiny and the accused will have the opportunity to present his defence during judicial proceedings. The SIT’s ongoing investigation will determine whether the alleged theft was an isolated incident or part of a broader criminal operation.
