Siliguri Hoteliers Enforce Total Ban on Bangladeshi Nationals, Revoke All Exceptions

West Bengal hoteliers tighten total ban amid escalating tensions.

The Greater Siliguri Hoteliers Welfare Association has reinforced its comprehensive ban on accommodating any Bangladeshi nationals, explicitly revoking all prior exceptions, including those for individuals holding medical or student visas. This escalation follows an initial restriction imposed in late 2024, prompted by ongoing political instability in Bangladesh and reports of anti-India sentiment.

Joint Secretary Ujjal Ghosh stated that the decision stems from provocative statements by certain Bangladeshi leaders regarding the strategically vital Siliguri Corridor—often called India's "Chicken's Neck"—and the northeastern states, known as the Seven Sisters. These remarks, combined with persistent reports of violence against minorities and anti-India rhetoric, have led hoteliers to prioritize national security and solidarity over business interests.

Association officials underscored that the measure aims to safeguard guests, staff, and national dignity in the prevailing sensitive environment. Ghosh emphasized, "Our country comes first," acknowledging potential financial losses but affirming that accommodations will remain unavailable until the bilateral situation improves substantially and mutual respect is restored.

The association, encompassing approximately 180 hotels in the Siliguri area, has reported unanimous compliance among its members. Additionally, nearly 50 non-affiliated hotels have independently adopted the same policy, demonstrating widespread regional support for the initiative.

In neighboring Malda district, hotel owners are actively deliberating a parallel restriction, with the Malda Hotel Owners Association—representing around 250 properties—scheduled to convene and decide on barring Bangladeshi nationals, reflecting broader concerns over strained India-Bangladesh relations amid continuing turmoil across the border.
