Sikkim Monitors 16 High-Risk Glacial Lakes With Sensors, Early Warning Systems
Sikkim strengthens glacial flood monitoring after Nepal's disaster.
Sikkim is continuously monitoring 16 highly vulnerable glacial lakes after identifying them as potential risks for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), State Relief Commissioner Rinzing Chewang said on Monday. The state, which has more than 400 glacial lakes of varying sizes, has installed sensors at most vulnerable sites to track changes in water levels and lake volume. Of the 16 high-risk lakes, 13 are located in North Sikkim and three in West Sikkim.
Chewang said the monitoring system has been strengthened with early warning systems and automated weather stations, particularly in North Sikkim, where most of the vulnerable lakes are located. The equipment is intended to provide authorities with timely information about rising water levels and other changes that could indicate an increased flood risk. The measures have been expanded as Sikkim strengthens its preparedness for glacier-related disasters.
The state's preparedness has gained renewed importance following the recent glacier-related disaster in Nepal near the Nepal-Tibet border. Chewang drew parallels between the Nepal incident and the October 2023 South Lhonak GLOF in Sikkim, when a portion of a glacier entered the lake, displaced a large volume of water and triggered devastating flooding downstream. He said the 2023 disaster provided Sikkim with an opportunity to study GLOF risks and develop greater capacity to respond to similar emergencies.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay on Monday also flagged off a team of volunteers carrying relief materials to flood-affected areas in Nepal. The team includes doctors who will provide assistance, assess conditions on the ground and support local authorities where required. Three officials from the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, including two Deputy Directors, have also been deputed to Nepal to assist with assessment and relief efforts.
Golay said Sikkim's decision to assist Nepal was influenced by the support the state received after the South Lhonak disaster in 2023. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness in coordination with the state's Science and Technology Department and central government agencies. According to him, work is underway on prevention, preparedness, restoration and reconstruction, including measures for vulnerable and low-lying areas and relocation where necessary.
Sikkim has also offered to share its experience in managing GLOF risks with Nepal as the neighbouring country responds to the recent disaster. The state's approach combines scientific assessment, continuous monitoring, automated weather systems and early warning mechanisms. Authorities believe the experience gained from the South Lhonak disaster can help strengthen preparedness not only within Sikkim but also in other Himalayan regions vulnerable to glacier-related floods.
