Sikh Bodies Urge Govt Action Over Disruption of Nagar Kirtan in New Zealand
New Zealand locals confront religious procession with haka protest.
A permitted Sikh Nagar Kirtan procession in Manurewa, South Auckland, was briefly disrupted on December 20, 2025, when members of True Patriots of NZ, a group linked to Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki, performed a haka and displayed banners reading "This is New Zealand not India." The standoff lasted approximately half an hour, with police intervening to separate the groups and ensure the procession concluded peacefully.
The event, organised by the Nanaksar Sikh Temple with official council approval, involved hundreds of participants marching along Great South Road while singing hymns and distributing food. Sikh attendees remained composed despite the confrontation, which included chants of Christian slogans by the protesters. No violence, arrests, or injuries were reported.
Brian Tamaki posted videos and statements on social media, alleging the presence of Khalistan flags, describing the procession as a "mass invasion" via immigration, and questioning the public display of ceremonial swords and road closures. He framed the protest as a defence of New Zealand identity, claiming it highlighted concerns over foreign influences and terrorism links.

Prominent Sikh bodies, including Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj and SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, condemned the opposition as an attack on religious freedom and communal harmony. They urged the New Zealand and Indian governments to intervene, ensure protection for minorities practising their traditions, and promote dialogue based on mutual respect.
The incident has sparked broader debate on multiculturalism, immigration, and religious rights in New Zealand, with police reaffirming commitment to lawful protests while preventing intimidation. Sikh leaders emphasised the community's harmonious integration and contributions through service, calling for amicable resolution.
