Siddaramaiah Submits Resignation As Karnataka CM, Succession Process Begins

Siddaramaiah resigned as Karnataka CM, enabling DK Shivakumar’s leadership transition.

Karnataka witnessed a major political transition on Thursday as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to the Governor’s Office at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru, formally paving the way for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to assume the state’s top post. The development marks the culmination of months of speculation over leadership change within the Congress government.

Siddaramaiah confirmed that he had submitted his resignation in the absence of Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, who was not present in the city at the time. He said the decision followed directions from the Congress high command. “High command directed me two days ago to step down, accordingly I submitted my resignation today,” he said, adding that he had the opportunity to serve Karnataka twice and had honoured the party leadership’s decision.

He further stated that he was confident the Governor would accept his resignation in accordance with constitutional provisions. Officials from the Governor’s office said the resignation has been received but will be formally acted upon only after the Governor returns from his travel.

Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah hosted a breakfast meeting at his official residence, where he informed cabinet colleagues of his decision and reflected on his tenure. He later arrived at Lok Bhavan around 3 pm to formally submit his resignation letter.

D K Shivakumar, widely seen as the successor, is expected to take charge as Chief Minister, with reports suggesting the possibility of two to three Deputy Chief Ministers being appointed alongside him. His elevation is viewed as part of an internal leadership arrangement aimed at maintaining balance within the state Congress unit.

The transition marks the end of Siddaramaiah’s latest tenure, which included significant welfare initiatives but also faced political challenges and controversies. As the Congress prepares for local body elections, the leadership change is expected to test the party’s unity and organisational stability in Karnataka.
