Siachen Base Camp Nears Landmark Power Upgrade As Grid Connection Arrives By September
Siachen Base Camp will receive grid electricity by September first.
Siachen Base Camp is set to receive electricity through the power grid for the first time by September 15, with Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena directing officials to complete key transmission projects within the stipulated deadline. The initiative will also extend grid connectivity to the remote regions of Zanskar and Nubra, marking a significant milestone in the Union Territory's power infrastructure.
The announcement was made by the Lieutenant Governor in a post on X after reviewing Ladakh's power sector. He said the transmission projects would considerably expand the region's electricity network by bringing reliable grid power to strategically important and geographically challenging border areas. The administration has fixed September 15 as the target date for completing the works ahead of the harsh winter season.
The infrastructure projects include the construction of a 189-kilometre, 220 kV transmission line connecting Drass and Padum, as well as a 79-kilometre, 220 kV transmission line from Phyang to Diskit. The plan also involves the development of substations across Zanskar, Nubra and Changthang, creating a stronger and more reliable electricity network across these remote regions.

According to Mr Saxena, the new transmission system will ensure round-the-clock electricity supply to Siachen Base Camp, Zanskar, Nubra and other border areas. A dependable power supply is expected to improve essential services such as healthcare, education, digital connectivity and tourism while also supporting local livelihoods and strengthening infrastructure in these high-altitude regions.
Large parts of Ladakh currently rely on diesel generators because of the region's rugged terrain and limited access to the national power grid. The transmission projects are being executed under the Centre's Prime Minister's Development Package (PMDP), with the objective of reducing dependence on diesel-powered generation and advancing the government's vision of making Ladakh a carbon-neutral region.
Upon completion, six of Ladakh's seven districts will be connected to the power grid for the first time. The administration is aiming to finish the projects before winter sets in, as extreme weather conditions often disrupt infrastructure development across the Himalayan Union Territory, making timely execution critical for long-term energy security and regional development.
