Shivraj Chouhan Invites Tourists to Kashmir, Calls it ‘Heaven on Earth’

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan urged Indians to visit Jammu and Kashmir

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan passionately urged Indians to visit Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the region’s warmth and natural beauty despite recent terror incidents. Speaking on the sidelines of the sixth convocation of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in Srinagar, Chouhan sought to revive tourism, which has slumped since the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, including 25 tourists and a local pony operator.

“I appeal to my fellow citizens: come to Jammu and Kashmir without fear. The people here await you with hearts full of love and warmth, ready to set an example of brotherhood,” Chouhan said. Reflecting on his visit, he added, “Since arriving in Srinagar yesterday, the calm air, the scent of the soil, and the love of the people have captivated me. This is truly India’s crown jewel, a heaven on earth.” He recounted an emotional moment during a shikara ride on Dal Lake, where a boatman pleaded, “Mama, tell people to come here. Our hearts are filled with love for them.”

Chouhan’s call comes as the region grapples with an 80% cancellation rate in tourist bookings post-Pahalgam, with thousands fleeing via special flights and trains. Despite this, recent efforts, including the reopening of 16 tourist destinations in June and a new Srinagar-Katra train link, signal a gradual revival.

During his two-day visit, Chouhan met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to discuss agriculture and rural development, announcing a Rs 150-crore Clean Plant Centre to provide disease-free apple, almond, and walnut plants. “We aim to make Jammu and Kashmir a global horticulture hub, with its apples reaching every corner of the world,” he said, also unveiling plans for a saffron tissue culture lab and subsidies for private nurseries. Additionally, under the PM Awas Yojana, five lakh homeless individuals have been identified for housing post-verification.

Addressing SKUAST students, Chouhan expressed confidence that the university, currently ranked fifth among state agricultural universities, would soon claim the top spot. “Your studies have just begun. Apply your knowledge to make India the world’s food basket,” he urged.

Chouhan’s visit, part of the Centre’s Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, underscores a commitment to sustainable agriculture and rural empowerment, aiming to restore confidence in Kashmir’s tourism and economic potential.
