‘Shishtachar’ Squads to Combat Eve-Teasing; Delhi Police Focus on Women's Safety

The Delhi Police has introduced “Shishtachar” anti-eve teasing squads to enhance women’s safety across the capital, with patrols set to begin soon in public spaces.
Announced via an order from Commissioner Sanjay Arora on March 8, these squads will focus on enforcing laws against harassment, including eve-teasing and molestation, while avoiding moral policing.
Each district will deploy at least two squads, supervised by an Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Crime Against Women Cell. A squad comprises an inspector, a sub-inspector, four female officers, and five male officers, supported by special staff or Anti-Auto Theft Squad personnel. Operating in plainclothes, they will target “hotspots” identified by District Deputy Commissioners of Police, patrolling at least two vulnerable locations daily.
The initiative adopts a multi-pronged strategy of prevention, intervention, and victim support. Squads will conduct surprise checks on public transport, collaborating with Delhi Transport Corporation staff and passengers to report incidents. Sensitivity and empathy are emphasized, ensuring victims face no public embarrassment.
This move aligns with the BJP’s 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections manifesto promising “Anti-Romeo Squads” and CCTV networks for security. It also echoes Uttar Pradesh’s 2017 “Anti-Romeo” drive against harassment. Delhi Police aims to foster a safer environment for women through proactive enforcement and community coordination, marking a significant step in curbing crimes against women in the capital while prioritizing effective deterrence.
