Shinde Promises Fair Maratha Quota Resolution
Maharashtra's Deputy CM balances community demands
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the ongoing Maratha reservation issue on Friday, emphasizing that the state government is committed to ensuring justice for the Maratha community while safeguarding the interests of other communities. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Shinde underscored the government’s positive stance toward Maratha quota demands but stressed that any solution must be legally sound and fair to all groups.
The statement comes as Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange launched an indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai, demanding a 10 per cent reservation for Marathas under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. Jarange, 43, is pushing for all Marathas to be recognized as Kunbis, an agrarian caste already included in the OBC category, which would grant them access to reservations in government jobs and educational institutions. His protest has drawn significant attention, with supporters rallying for swift action.
Shinde reiterated the government’s efforts to address the issue, recalling that during his tenure as Chief Minister, a 10 per cent reservation was implemented for Marathas, benefiting many in the community. “We have always worked for the Maratha community and will continue to do so,” he said, while emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that avoids harming other communities.

Responding to criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, Shinde urged opponents to clarify their positions on the reservation issue, highlighting the government’s proactive steps. The Maratha quota debate has been a contentious issue in Maharashtra, with previous agitations leading to widespread protests and political debates.
The government is now exploring legally viable options to meet Jarange’s demands while ensuring harmony among communities. Sources indicate that discussions with legal experts and community leaders are underway to find a sustainable solution. As the hunger strike continues, all eyes are on the state’s next moves to resolve this complex issue.
