Shehzad Poonawalla’s Mother Suffers Serious Injuries in Pune Vehicle Attack

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Tuesday said his mother sustained serious injuries after being struck by a car in an alleged hit-and-run incident in Pune and appealed to the police to swiftly identify and arrest the accused.

According to Poonawalla, the incident took place a few hours before he shared details on social media. He alleged that an unidentified individual deliberately rammed a vehicle into his mother and fled the spot, leaving her critically injured. She has since been admitted to the hospital and is scheduled to undergo surgery.

Sharing his anguish on X, Poonawalla wrote that his mother was run over by a car in what he described as a deliberate act. “A few hours ago, an extremely disgusting human being ran his car over my mother deliberately—leaving her seriously injured—and ran away. She will be undergoing surgery very soon. Kindly pray for her,” he said.

Expressing distress over the incident, the BJP spokesperson described his mother as a compassionate person and said the attack had deeply shaken the family. He also tagged the Pune City Police, the Pune Commissioner of Police, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and the Chief Minister’s Office, urging authorities to take strict legal action against the accused.

“Hope Pune Police will arrest that person and will ensure he doesn’t get away with it,” Poonawalla added.

In a related development, Shehzad Poonawalla’s brother, political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla, also posted about the incident on social media and shared what he said was CCTV footage capturing the moment their mother was hit by the vehicle.

Providing details of the circumstances, Tehseen said their mother, a senior citizen, had stepped out of the car while their driver and executive assistant were refuelling the vehicle. He alleged that a car suddenly struck her while she was standing at a distance and then fled the scene.

“My mom, a senior citizen, went for a drive with my driver and executive assistant and was waiting on the side while they were tanking up the gas in our car. Someone just hit her (seems deliberate) and ran away,” he wrote.

Tehseen said a police complaint would be filed and efforts were underway to trace the vehicle involved. Questioning how the incident could have been accidental, he said his mother was standing far from the road when she was hit.

He later provided an update on her medical condition, stating that she had suffered a fractured hip and would require surgery. “Her hip is broken, and she has to undergo surgery. We have got her admitted to the hospital. If her vitals are okay, surgery will be done tomorrow,” he said.

Calling the incident “infuriating and heartbreaking”, Tehseen expressed concern over the trauma suffered by his mother. He added that he had spoken to senior police officials, including the Joint Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, and urged swift action in the case.

“Mom will have to undergo hip surgery and will need a rod for life. This is extremely painful and disturbing. Whether this was deliberate or the person chose to flee after hitting a senior citizen, such behaviour cannot be tolerated,” he said.

As of now, the Pune Police have not issued an official statement on the incident. Investigations are expected to continue, with authorities examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the accused.
