Shashi Tharoor praises PM Modi’s leadership and speaking skills.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday offered a nuanced assessment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, praising his oratory skills and governance impact while also raising concerns over growing political and institutional challenges during his tenure.
Speaking to IANS, Tharoor described PM Modi as a “powerful orator” with a strong and articulate vision for the country. He said the Prime Minister possesses “tremendous dynamism and energy” and has been able to leave a significant imprint on Indian politics, society, and governance over the years. Tharoor added that Modi’s ability to communicate effectively in Hindi has helped him connect with a large section of the population and maintain a strong national presence.
The Congress leader also acknowledged achievements in economic development, particularly in infrastructure expansion. He noted that while significant progress has been made in certain areas under the Modi government, there remains scope for further improvement to ensure balanced and inclusive growth across sectors and regions.

However, Tharoor also highlighted what he described as growing concerns during the current political era. He pointed to increasing social and political divisions, warning about what he called a widening communal divide and the impact of polarising rhetoric in public discourse. According to him, such trends have contributed to a sense of alienation among sections of society.
He further raised concerns about federal balance, stating that people in southern India have expressed apprehensions regarding the strength and functioning of India’s federal structure. Tharoor also referred to opposition allegations regarding the functioning of key institutions, including the Enforcement Directorate and the Election Commission, suggesting that questions have been raised about their independence in recent years.
Concluding his remarks, Tharoor said that while he holds respect for Prime Minister Modi and acknowledges several positive developments under his leadership, the past decade has also seen challenges that require attention to safeguard democratic institutions and social cohesion in the country.
