Severe Turbulence Rocks Air India Phuket-Delhi Flight, Fourteen Passengers And Crew Injured

Air India flight AI2379, operating from Phuket in Thailand to New Delhi, experienced a sudden turbulence-related altitude drop on Tuesday, leaving 14 people onboard with minor injuries before the aircraft landed safely at its destination. The airline said the aircraft encountered a turbulence-related event that caused a momentary change in altitude during the flight. Among those injured were 10 passengers and four crew members. Despite the incident, the flight completed its journey safely, and all passengers and crew disembarked without any serious injuries being reported.

According to Air India, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of altitude during the flight, which the pilot attributed to turbulence or a possible updraft or downdraft. Preliminary information indicated that the aircraft briefly descended by around 300 feet before the crew regained stable flight. Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 showed that AI2379 departed Phuket at approximately 8:25 am local time and landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at around 11:50 am. The airline did not report any technical malfunction and described the incident as turbulence-related.

After the aircraft landed safely in Delhi, airport medical teams attended to the affected passengers and crew members. Air India said those requiring medical assessment were taken to a medical facility at the airport as a precaution. The airline emphasised that no serious injuries had been reported and that it was extending all necessary support to those affected. While the airline confirmed that 14 people suffered minor injuries, news agency PTI, citing sources, reported that 12 people on board were injured. The reason for the discrepancy in the injury count was not immediately clarified.

Turbulence remains one of the most common in-flight hazards encountered by commercial aircraft, although modern airliners are designed to withstand far greater aerodynamic forces than those typically experienced during such events. Sudden changes in air currents, including clear-air turbulence, thunderstorms, or strong updrafts and downdrafts, can cause an aircraft to momentarily gain or lose altitude. Aviation experts have consistently advised passengers to keep their seat belts fastened whenever seated, even when the seat belt sign is switched off, as unexpected turbulence can occur without warning. Cabin crew members are particularly vulnerable during such incidents if they are serving passengers or moving through the cabin.

Air India has not indicated that the aircraft sustained any damage or that the flight required an emergency diversion. The airline reiterated that the aircraft landed safely and that passenger safety remains its highest priority. It also said its teams were assisting those who required medical attention following the incident. No further operational disruptions related to the flight were announced, and there was no immediate indication that aviation authorities had launched a formal investigation. Airlines routinely review flight data and crew reports after turbulence-related events to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess whether any additional safety measures are necessary.

The incident adds to a series of turbulence-related events reported globally in recent years, reflecting growing attention on the risks posed by changing weather patterns and atmospheric conditions. While severe turbulence remains relatively rare, aviation regulators and airlines continue to stress the importance of following crew instructions, particularly regarding seat belt use during flights.
