Sengamalapatti Blast Claims Fifth Victim As Probe Into Firecracker Unit Explosion Continues
Firecracker factory blast kills five in Tamil Nadu
The death toll in the Sengamalapatti firecracker unit blast in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district has increased to five after the identification of two more victims and the death of an injured worker who was undergoing treatment. The tragic incident, which occurred on Sunday, has once again raised concerns over safety practices and possible violations in the state’s firecracker manufacturing sector.
The explosion took place at a shed in Sengamalapatti where workers were allegedly engaged in the illegal manufacturing of adiyal, a type of paper bomb cracker. According to officials, the blast caused extensive damage to the facility and resulted in the deaths of multiple workers. The initial casualties included R Ramprakash, 38, and S Inachimuthu, 44, who died at the site of the explosion.
Another worker, R Ramachandran, 40, sustained severe injuries in the blast and was immediately taken for medical treatment. Despite efforts by doctors, he died on Monday due to the seriousness of his injuries. His death took the toll from the incident to three, while authorities continued efforts to identify other possible victims. Two additional workers, S Ayyaparaj, 37, and M Pandithurai, 35, were believed to have been present at the cracker unit during the explosion.
However, their identities could not be confirmed immediately after the incident as rescue teams recovered only unidentified body parts from the site. Police and Revenue Department officials said on Sunday that it was unclear whether the two workers had managed to escape or were among those killed in the blast.
On Monday, family members of Pandithurai identified his remains, following which the body was sent for postmortem examination. Later in the evening, district administration officials confirmed that the remains of Ayyaparaj had also been identified. Authorities said a postmortem examination would be conducted as part of the process of officially confirming the cause of death and completing legal procedures.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹4 lakh each for the families of those whose identities had been confirmed. The Chief Minister also instructed Virudhunagar District Collector N O Sukhaputra to conduct a review of cracker manufacturing units operating in the region and determine whether any facilities were functioning without proper government licences.

The district administration has been asked to take appropriate action against units found violating safety regulations. Officials are expected to inspect whether the affected unit had necessary approvals, followed safety guidelines and complied with rules governing the handling and production of explosive materials.
Virudhunagar is one of India’s largest centres for fireworks manufacturing, with thousands of workers employed in the industry. While many units operate under government regulations, the district has witnessed several accidents in recent years due to alleged violations, unsafe working conditions and improper handling of explosive substances.
Firecracker manufacturing requires strict adherence to safety standards because even minor lapses can lead to devastating consequences. Authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining licensed operations, ensuring proper storage of chemicals and providing workers with adequate safety measures. The Sengamalapatti blast has renewed demands for stronger monitoring of cracker units across the district.
Labour and safety officials are expected to increase inspections to identify illegal operations and prevent similar incidents in the future. As investigations continue, authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the explosion and whether negligence or violations contributed to the tragedy. The incident has left families grieving and has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety rules in Tamil Nadu’s firecracker industry.
