Security Strengthened As Police Launch Project Hawk Eye For Amarnath Yatra Route

Police strengthen Amarnath Yatra route security with Hawk Eye.

Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched “Project Hawk Eye”, a multi-layered surveillance and security initiative aimed at strengthening protection along the traditional Amarnath Yatra route through Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The initiative has been introduced to ensure round-the-clock monitoring and safe passage for pilgrims undertaking the annual pilgrimage. According to police officials, the project integrates advanced aerial and ground-based surveillance systems with strategic manpower deployment to enhance real-time situational awareness.

The security grid has been designed to improve response time, detect potential threats early, and maintain uninterrupted vigilance across sensitive stretches of the pilgrimage route. As part of the initiative, five drone units have been deployed at key locations along the yatra corridor to provide continuous aerial surveillance. These drones are intended to assist ground forces by offering live monitoring feeds, enabling authorities to quickly assess developing situations and coordinate immediate responses if required.

In addition to aerial monitoring, 28 strategically placed Machan Morchas—elevated observation posts—have been established across vulnerable points along the route. These positions allow security personnel to maintain heightened surveillance over difficult terrain and high-traffic areas. Further strengthening the security framework, 22 specially trained sniper teams have been stationed at designated locations to provide rapid response capability in case of any emergency situation.

The surveillance system has also been reinforced with the installation of 416 high-resolution CCTV cameras and Facial Recognition System (FRS) infrastructure at critical points along the pilgrimage track. These systems are being used for continuous monitoring and identification of suspicious movements, thereby supporting preventive policing and improving overall security preparedness.  Officials stated that the integration of drones, CCTV networks, and ground-based observation posts has created a seamless security architecture, described as having “eyes in the sky and on the ground.”

This coordinated approach is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted monitoring of the pilgrimage route throughout the duration of the yatra. Police emphasized that “Project Hawk Eye” reflects their commitment to adopting modern technology and professional policing practices to safeguard pilgrims. The initiative is intended to provide a secure environment while facilitating the smooth conduct of one of the most significant religious pilgrimages in the region.
