Securing India’s Future: PM Modi Emphasizes Self-Reliance in Critical Sectors

PM Modi calls for resilient semiconductor ecosystem, self-reliance in energy and critical minerals amid global disruptions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday emphasized the need for secure and resilient supply chains in critical sectors such as semiconductors, energy, and minerals, citing disruptions caused by global crises in recent years. Speaking after inaugurating Kaynes Semicon’s OSAT facility in Sanand, he underscored the strategic importance of self-reliance for India’s growth and development.

“Whether it is chips, rare earth minerals or energy, all have been affected due to conflicts,” PM Modi said, noting that challenges such as the pandemic and ongoing geopolitical tensions have impacted the global flow of goods and raw materials. “Breaks in the supply chain and its flow will impact humanity’s development,” he added, highlighting the need for India to gain leadership in maintaining continuity in these critical sectors.

The Prime Minister recalled India’s strategic efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic to strengthen self-reliance and emerge as a global hub for semiconductors, alongside initiatives in artificial intelligence, clean energy, electric vehicles, defence, and electronics. He pointed to the India Semiconductor Mission, launched in 2021, as a reflection of the country’s confidence and ambition. “This is not an industrial policy but an announcement of India’s self-confidence. Its impact is in front of everyone,” he said.

Under the mission, 10 semiconductor projects worth ₹1.6 lakh crore are currently underway across six states, including facilities by Kaynes Semicon and Micron Technology. PM Modi also highlighted India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, announced in this year’s Union Budget, which focuses on domestic production of semiconductor materials and equipment, aiming to create a full-stack semiconductor ecosystem in the country.

In addition to domestic initiatives, the Prime Minister stressed global partnerships to strengthen supply chains, including India’s participation in Pax Silica. He also outlined efforts to secure critical minerals, including the launch of the National Critical Minerals Mission, a ₹1,500 crore recycling scheme, and the creation of a rare earth corridor covering Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala to integrate mining, refining, and manufacturing processes.

“It would have been better if this work had started 30–40 years ago, but now India is working in mission mode. This decade is India’s decade,” PM Modi said, underscoring the government’s push to establish India as a global leader in semiconductors and other critical sectors.
