Second Post-Mortem Of Zubeen Garg Conducted At Gauhati Medical College

Zubeen Garg's body was examined again before cremation with state honours in Assam.

A second post-mortem examination of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg was conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Tuesday morning, following his tragic death in a scuba diving accident in Singapore on September 19. The procedure, overseen by a panel of four doctors from GMCH, Pragjyotishpur Medical College, and AIIMS, was prompted by public demands for clarity, despite an initial autopsy in Singapore citing drowning as the cause. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid his respects at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai, where Garg’s body had been kept since Sunday, before it was taken for the examination.

After the post-mortem, Garg’s body was returned to Sarusajai Stadium, from where his funeral procession will proceed to Kamarkuchi in Sonapur for his last rites with full state honours. Sarma, reflecting on the singer’s legacy, posted on X, “The last two days symbolised the love he commands over people. There will never be another Zubeen.” The state has declared a dry day, and educational institutions are closed statewide, with government offices shut in Kamrup (Metro) district to honour the cultural icon.

The cremation, set for later today, will see police personnel serve as pallbearers, and large LED screens have been installed across Assam to allow fans to witness Garg’s final journey. Notable attendees include Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, representing the central government, Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia, and AASU representatives, reflecting Garg’s immense influence. Meghalaya has also closed wine shops along the cortege’s route in solidarity.

Garg, 52, was a beloved figure whose music defined Assamese culture, leaving a void felt across India. The second post-mortem, conducted amid public speculation, aims to address concerns, though Sarma noted Singapore’s autopsy was likely sufficient. As Assam mourns, the state’s tribute underscores Garg’s enduring legacy as a voice of its people.
