SC Directs Probe Into Delhi Hospitals For Allegedly Refusing Care To Stabbed Advocate

SC orders probe into hospitals denying stabbed lawyer treatment

The Supreme Court of India has ordered a probe into allegations that three hospitals in the national capital denied treatment to a stabbed advocate, raising serious concerns about emergency medical care and institutional accountability.

The court took cognisance of the matter after reports emerged that the injured lawyer was refused immediate treatment despite being in critical condition. The advocate had reportedly sustained stab injuries and was taken to multiple hospitals in Delhi, but was allegedly turned away before eventually receiving care. The delay in treatment has since come under judicial scrutiny.

A bench of the apex court directed the relevant authorities to conduct a detailed inquiry into the sequence of events and determine whether medical protocols were violated. The court emphasized that hospitals, particularly in emergency cases, are duty-bound to provide immediate treatment regardless of procedural or administrative issues. It also sought a report identifying any lapses and fixing responsibility where necessary.

The case has once again highlighted longstanding concerns around denial of emergency medical care in India. Legal experts point out that under existing laws and judicial precedents, including past rulings of the Supreme Court, no hospital can refuse treatment to a patient in a life-threatening condition. Any such refusal can attract strict legal consequences.

Authorities are expected to examine records from the hospitals involved, including admission logs, referral notes, and staff responses at the time of the incident. Statements from medical personnel and eyewitnesses may also form part of the probe as officials attempt to reconstruct the timeline of events leading to the alleged denial of care.

The court’s intervention is likely to have wider implications for healthcare compliance and patient rights, particularly in emergency scenarios. Further developments are awaited as the inquiry progresses, with the findings expected to guide any subsequent legal or administrative action.
