SC Bar Chief Pradeep Rai Calls CJI Kant A Fatherly Figure, Says Lawyers Can Approach Him
Pradeep Rai praises CJI Kant's approachable leadership.
Senior advocate Pradeep Rai, newly elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), on Wednesday described Chief Justice of India Surya Kant as a "fatherly figure" and said the newly elected office-bearers would work under his guidance. Rai's remarks came after the election of the new SCBA executive committee. Rai said members of the Bar could always approach the Chief Justice, emphasising the relationship between the judiciary and the legal profession. Describing Surya Kant as a fatherly figure, the newly elected SCBA president indicated that the association would seek his guidance while addressing issues concerning advocates and the functioning of the Supreme Court Bar.
The SCBA represents advocates practising before the Supreme Court and plays an important role in raising issues concerning the legal profession, court infrastructure and the interests of members of the Bar. The election of its office-bearers is therefore closely watched within the legal community. Rai's comments also underline the importance of coordination between the Bar and the Bench. While advocates represent litigants and make submissions before courts, the Bar's institutional role includes engaging with the judiciary on matters affecting the administration of justice and working conditions for lawyers.
CJI Surya Kant, for his part, expressed hope that the newly elected SCBA office-bearers would "lead the bar by example". His message placed emphasis on professional standards and responsible leadership as the new executive committee begins its tenure. The relationship between the Supreme Court Bar and the judiciary has traditionally involved both cooperation and debate over issues affecting advocates and court functioning. The SCBA has previously raised concerns ranging from facilities for lawyers to listing practices and other administrative matters before the apex court.

Rai's assurance that the new committee would work under the CJI's guidance signals an emphasis on dialogue as the association begins its new term. His remarks also suggest that the leadership intends to maintain an accessible channel of communication with the Chief Justice. The newly elected office-bearers will now be expected to address issues facing Supreme Court advocates while maintaining constructive engagement with the Bench. The SCBA's role includes representing the collective interests of its members as well as contributing to discussions surrounding the effective functioning of the justice system.
Rai's description of the CJI as a "fatherly figure" adds a personal dimension to the relationship he hopes to establish between the association and the Chief Justice. His comments, coupled with Surya Kant's call for the new leadership to set an example, point towards a focus on professional conduct, cooperation and institutional responsibility. The new SCBA leadership takes charge at a time when the legal community continues to discuss several issues concerning the functioning of the Supreme Court. Its ability to work closely with the Bench while independently representing advocates' concerns will remain central to its role during the new term.
