“Sanskrit Must Reach Every Home,” Declares RSS Chief Bhagwat

RSS chief says Sanskrit vital for India’s identity

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat made a passionate appeal on Friday to popularize Sanskrit as a medium of everyday communication across India, asserting that the language is not only the root of all Indian tongues but also key to understanding the nation’s essence.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Abhinav Bharti International Academic building at Kavi Kulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University in Nagpur, Bhagwat emphasized that knowing Sanskrit goes beyond academic study—it's about using it to express and connect. “There is a big difference between understanding Sanskrit and speaking it. I know the language but still struggle to speak it fluently,” he admitted.

Bhagwat stressed the need for both government and public support to revive Sanskrit, stating that language carries emotion and identity. “Language is a ‘bhav’—an emotion—and Sanskrit is our cultural foundation. If we want true self-reliance (atmanirbharta), we must develop our intellect, and Sanskrit is key to that process,” he said.

He concluded by saying that Sanskrit’s widespread use could strengthen India’s cultural individuality, or ‘swatwa’, and help unify its diverse linguistic heritage.
