Sam Altman Demands Urgent Global Regulation of AI Now

Sam Altman stresses the urgent need for AI regulation globally.

The world urgently needs stronger regulation of artificial intelligence, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said on Thursday while addressing the AI Impact Summit in the national capital. His remarks underscored growing global concern over the rapid advancement of powerful AI systems and the need for coordinated oversight.

Speaking at the annual gathering focused on managing advanced computing technologies, Altman warned that unchecked concentration of AI capabilities could pose serious risks. “Centralisation of this technology in one company or country could lead to ruin,” he said, highlighting the importance of balanced development and shared governance of the technology.

The AI Impact Summit—now in its fourth year—brings together policymakers, industry leaders and researchers to examine both the opportunities and risks associated with next-generation computing. Discussions this year have largely centred on how governments and companies should respond to the accelerating pace of generative AI innovation.

Demand for generative AI tools has surged worldwide, significantly boosting revenues for technology firms while simultaneously fuelling anxiety about potential societal, economic and environmental consequences. Altman’s call adds to a growing chorus of industry voices urging policymakers to move quickly in establishing clear global frameworks for responsible AI development and deployment.
