Safdarjung Hospital Says Wangchuk Weak but Stable After Admission
Hospital says Wangchuk stable but weak, needs monitoring.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is in a stable condition but requires continuous medical observation after being admitted to VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi on Saturday morning, hospital authorities said. Wangchuk was shifted to the hospital on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike after concerns were raised over his deteriorating health. The activist has been protesting while demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak.
In its first official medical update, Safdarjung Hospital stated that Wangchuk was admitted at 7.40 a.m. for necessary medical care. The hospital said he was suffering from weakness caused by prolonged fasting and dehydration. According to the statement, although his condition is currently stable, he requires continuous observation, monitoring and treatment to restore his body's vital parameters. Doctors are closely assessing his health as he remains under medical supervision.
According to the Delhi Police, Wangchuk was shifted to the hospital following medical advice and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court. Authorities said the decision was taken after his health showed signs of deterioration during the prolonged fast. The High Court had earlier directed the Centre to take all necessary steps to safeguard Wangchuk's life, emphasising the importance of providing appropriate medical care.

Following his hospitalisation, Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali J. Angmo urged authorities not to administer any oral or intravenous treatment without first obtaining the consent of the family and the doctors who had been monitoring his condition throughout the protest. In a post on social media, she stated that no medical intervention should be undertaken without consultation with the family. She also maintained that Wangchuk had been in stable condition before being shifted to the hospital and questioned the necessity of the transfer.
Doctors monitoring Wangchuk during the hunger strike have reportedly stated that he has lost more than eight kilograms since the protest began. The prolonged fast has raised growing concerns regarding dehydration, nutritional deficiency and other health complications commonly associated with extended periods without food. Medical professionals are expected to continue evaluating his condition while providing supportive treatment aimed at stabilising his health.
Meanwhile, the protest continues despite Wangchuk's hospitalisation, with supporters maintaining demonstrations in New Delhi. The hunger strike, launched over the alleged NEET paper leak, has drawn national attention and prompted judicial intervention as concerns over the activist's health intensified. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while Wangchuk remains under medical care at Safdarjung Hospital.
